Lamentations trail JAMB Registration
Prospective candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination across the country are lamenting severe hardship in the ongoing Joint Admission And Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination registration process. Many of the candidates urge JAMB to revert to the former sales of scratch card process as they believe it’s easier and stress free compared to the present PIN Vending registration method.
Candidates emphasised that the Personal Identification Number (PIN) is not easy to obtain. Many of those who have successfully registered their 2017 JAMB examination lament how slow, stressful and expensive the registration process was. Yet, the number of applicants who are yet to register are still on the high side. At every registration center in Lagos, you will always find long queues as students get to the registration centres as early as 5 am to obtain their PIN and get biometrics done.
The new registration strategy which was meant to put an end to fraudulent activities in JAMB registration process continues to stir more reactions from candidates.
Many candidates told our correspondent how cumbersome and stressful the pin vending registration system is compared to the former use of scratch card. They urged JAMB to provide an easier registration means instead going to registration centres before having access to register for the exam. Also, they call for extension in the examination deadline date.
Kunle Owojori
The is the hardest JAMB registration process ever. I have been going to the centre for more than two weeks without being able to get my registration done. I have been here for the past 5 hours without getting anything done. The crowd is really much as you can see. So it’s a matter of first come, first served.
I have been here since 6 am, and I’m not sure if the registration will ever get to me before the day runs out. I want JAMB to bring back the old registration process. This present one is what I describe as terrible. We can’t bear wasting a lot of money daily all to get registration done.
Saheed Oladun
I completed my registration just yesterday, I have been coming here for more than a week. The registration process is tough; l must tell you, but if you really want to get things done, you must take your time to do it. I normally come here very early in the morning because we normally pick numbers. This means when you come late, you get the last digit. I commend the body (JAMB) for their effort to curb fraudulent activities, at the same time I want them to innovate a simple registration process that will be easier for all.
Kemi Adewale
The old registration process is far better than the new method. I have been coming here for two weeks without any luck. Yesterday, I picked number 94 at Agidingbi, First gate registration centre. It didn’t get to my turn and I went home.
Today, I came here early enough and I’m with number 47. I’m still waiting and hoping that the registration will eventually get to me, and if it doesn’t, it means I will have to try another day.

JAMB begins Sales of Forms
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) stated on Tuesday that sales of forms for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in march 2017 .
In a statement released by JAMB’s spokesperson Mr. Fabian Benjamin, the board has value added services to its operations. He said “ In the course of conducting admission , many institutions have admitted candidates on merit only for them to discover that such candidates do not have qualified O’Level results or the right combination of subjects for admission and had to delete and start the process all over again . With this , they would have denied other qualified candidates the opportunities for admissions.”
“This , we are addressing by ensuring that no candidate is henceforth recommended without his O ’ Level result being supplied. To achieve this , JAMB will insist that candidates supply their result on its website during registration or later , but before admissions commence for them to be considered for admissions. We believe this will allow only qualified candidates to be considered for admissions.”
Candidates would henceforth be allowed to make one choice of public university, where the new registration platform will now be first choice, second choice, third choice and fourth choice. According to Mr. Fabian Benjamin, the restructuring is aimed at increasing the opportunities available to candidates since most of all the public universities do not consider candidates on the second choice list as they hardly exhaust the applicants on the first choice list .
“We have designed a central admissions processing system , where the board will interface with the institutions and ensure compliance with this reform .“The summary is that no candidate will be admitted with awaiting result. Candidates and their parents are also to note that JAMB has restructured the registration platform to allow for only one choice of public university. “ The new registration platform will now be first choice , second choice, third choice and fourth choice and not most preferred, preferred e . t . c as it was. “Candidates’ first choice can be a college, university, innovative enterprises institutions or polytechnic/Monotechnic. “However, if a candidate makes a public university his first choice, he will not have any public university to choose for second, third and fourth choice. He will have on the remaining three choices, a college , polytechnic, private university and IEIs. “However, candidates for the 2017 UTME can now select the National Certificate in Education (College) or National Diploma ( Polytechnic /Monotechnic) as their first choice up to third choice and the fourth IEI . They can select the IEI (Innovative Enterprise Institution , ND ) as their first choice up to the fourth choice , but can only pick a public university once . ” Mr. Benjamin said.
He further stated that the registration for the 2017 UTME and direct entry would go on at the same time, adding that during registration, candidates’ biometrics (10 fingers) would be captured through the biometric verification machine. Mr. Fabian also warned candidates that no cyber café would be used for registrations. Benjamin said , “On no account should any candidate patronise any cyber café for registration . It is important to note that the board will not deploy the use of any scratch card for the 2017 UTME registration. “The board is poised to see that a reasonable percentage of candidates, who take this examination and are qualified, find placement in tertiary institutions”
